When is estimating important

No setup fees. No hidden costs. No downloads. Producing accurate estimates is one of the most important aspects of job management and key to successfully executing projects. Not only are estimates essential to winning new business, they also determine your project budget, your job schedule, and how you manage your resources , and ultimately, how much you invoice clients.

In this blog post, we provide an overview of cost estimates for service businesses and explain why accurate estimates are so important to improving business results.

The purpose of cost estimation is to predict the quantity, cost, and price of the resources required to complete a job within the project scope. Cost estimates are used to bid on new business from prospective clients and to inform your job and budget planning process.

Cost estimation is done by breaking the scope of the project down into manageable parts and using all information available previous experience, similar jobs, expertise in the industry to arrive at a total expected cost. Using software such as a job management system to manage and track your projects enables you to automatically collect data as you complete work, which you can use to accurately estimate future jobs.

Estimating is done at the beginning of new projects to arrive at an original cost estimate, but should be frequently reviewed and updated as new information becomes available or conditions change. Upon acceptance, the service provider is contractually obligated to complete the work at the specified price based on the terms that are outlined in the quote unless the scope of the work changes and a new quote is presented and agreed upon.

An estimate, on the other hand, is not contractually binding. Clients understand that the prices outlined are subject to change as the project progresses to reflect a greater level of detail about required resources, scope, or timelines.

Generally speaking, estimates are particularly useful when:. An estimate is much more than a simple list of project costs.

Cost estimates detail every component of work that is required to bring the project to life by outlining the assumptions that underlie each cost, inclusions and exclusions, and associated risks. Number lines are the BEST way to show this process, in my opinion! After teaching it this year, we practiced with these cards in pairs where they had to really work on that math talk where they explained their thinking and had to defend their ideas to their partners.

If you have followed me for any amount of time, you know that concept sorts are a huge part of my math program—for the higher level thinking they require AND for the math talk they generate. I put it together in a resource in case you want to try it with your students…all directions are included.

Such factors may include materials, labor, locations, project duration, building codes, special machinery, and even soil conditions at the site of a job. For instance, clients might overlook the cost of land acquisition for a construction project, or may not be aware of the role inclement weather can play throughout the duration of a project.

In locations that experience severe climates, construction projects often experience cost-overruns when the weather forces project delays. Additionally, there are other factors that estimators must take into consideration, including the availability of gas, electricity, water and sewer, surface topography, drainage, and the specific materials required to complete the project. For example, a company building an eco-friendly facility may utilize green materials that are more costly than a standard project but will realize reduced operating costs over time.

Material lead-times also come into play, as not all materials are immediately available and must be ordered in advance. Cost estimators depend on a variety of estimation techniques, which vary in speed and potential accuracy. The primary approaches to cost estimating include:. Although companies will eventually arrive at a feasible budget, identifying whether or not their spending cap is enough to turn their visions into reality cannot be achieved without an accurate and well-researched construction estimate.

Typically, a client will get several bids from competing construction companies, and in turn, each company will present their projected estimate for costs entailed and project duration. From there, the client will hire the company that they believe is best suited for their job and budget.

In some instances, contractors have estimators on staff, while others may use a third party. Whichever method is used, the estimator must be highly qualified for the job. As touched upon earlier, there are unforeseeable reasons for going over the original estimate, such as inclement weather.

However, because your construction estimation is one of the most important pieces of criteria used to hire a contractor, it must be as accurate and possible.

In the event that a project goes beyond the scope of an estimate, the client will either have to find a way to pay for the additional expenditures or decide to sacrifice a feature to save money.

Estimating requires creating a strategy which strengthens problem solving and logic skills. Other students rounded down to and said the answer was a little more than Either way is fine but one way got a closer estimation. More importantly, they figured out alternate strategies.

Estimating forces a student to think about what a reasonable answer would be. Another student tried to do long division but got mixed up and said the answer was 39 with a Remainder 1.
