Having played The Doctor for just shy of 3 years, Hartnell was very attached to the role and Doctor Who in general, and having already enjoyed a long and successful career in film and television, wasn't necessarily itching to seek out something new.
Instead, it was ailing health that forcibly brought Hartnell's Doctor Who tenure to a close - the actor suffered from a medical condition that restricted blood flow, negatively affecting his ability to remember and deliver lines.
Rumor had it that Hartnell himself was difficult to work with, and he had apparently developed a poor working relationship with the new production crew that had come in since the show's debut. In later seasons, the Doctor became famous for his and, at times, her capacity to regenerate into different bodies -- but this wasn't always a feature of the character.
When Hartnell's ability to play the role came into question, instead of entering into fraught negotiations or ending the show with the departure of their lead actor, the producers devised a new concept. They decided that the Doctor's alien origin gave his character the freedom to perform extraordinary actions, such as regenerating himself when close to death.
This allowed Doctor Who to continue with a replacement for Hartnell while offering an in-universe reason why a very different-looking actor could play the same role.
